Visit the Village Museum

McClellanville has a hidden jewel that is worth looking for.  The Village Museum, tucked away between the Town Hall budand the Town Playground, was started in 1999 and director Bud Hill has turned his little project into one of the best small museums around.  The museum chronicles the history of the entire St. James Santee area from the original Native American inhabitants through today.  There are many well crafted, informative exhibits.

The museum is located at 401 Pinckney Street in McClellanville, near the end of Pinckney Street.   Hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10 am- 5 pm (Closed 12-1 for lunch, Bud’s gotta eat).

There is a moderate fee to enter the museum, but members enter free.  Joining the museum has other benefits including the annual oyster roast.  This years oyster roast is going to be November 7th starting at 6 pm.  Its not too late to join and participate in this annual tradition under the Town Hall.

This weekend, Saturday October 24th, 2009 at 7:00 pm at the McClellanville Town Hall, the Village Museum presents a presentation by Dr. Walter Bonner, “Physicians and other Healers of St James, Santee Parish and McClellanville.”

Awendaw Green

colorpaper_logoIf you are a music fan than you have to check out the hidden jewel that has taken off recently, Awendaw Green.  Awendaw, our neighbors to the south is just 15 minutes away from McClellanville and 10 minutes north of Mt Pleasant.  Located just north of the Sewee Outpost, Awendaw Green is a new music venue that gives local artists and music fans a local place to display and watch some great talents.

Wednesday night is the “Barn Jam”.  This is a free concert series featuring local musicians.  They also host several yearly fundraisers that promote music in the schools.  On July 11th and 12th they are hosting Grass on the Green Concert featuring over 30 different bands and musicians.  The cost is $20 and proceeds go to benefit Winwood Farm and Pet Helpers.

This is a great venue run by great people and is a real asset to the community.  Here are links to some recent articles about Awendaw Green:
